From time to time, your air conditioner may experience a malfunction. Just like your computer or Wi-Fi router, your air conditioning unit may need to be reset. Understanding how to do this can save you a good bit of money because you won’t have to call on an AC service professional to do it for you.

Top Reasons for Resetting Your Air Conditioner

There are a few different reasons that you may want to reset your home’s AC unit. The most common is because your house experienced a power outage. Due to the built-in circuit protectors, your air conditioning system may not fully kick back on. Resetting it may be the only option to get it restarted and working properly.

Additionally, you may notice one day that your air conditioner has stopped blowing cold air. One of the first measures you’ll want to take is to reset your AC unit. Trying this first can save you a lot of hassle and help you to discover the problem.

Check Your Thermostat First

Before you try to reset your cooling system, you may first want to take a look at your thermostat. Make sure it’s set on the cooling function. Too often, homeowners forget to switch from the heating to the cooling function. A simple change to the cooling function will properly kick on your air conditioner.

Check Your Circuit Breaker Next

If you have a nasty storm, it may trip your circuit breaker for the system. Open up the cover for your electrical panel, and locate the breaker connected to your centralized home air conditioning system. If the breaker is tripped, it will be in a semi-off position. If the power outage tripped your breaker, simply turn it off and back on again. That should kick your system back on. If the circuit breaker is in the on position, it didn’t trip, and you should proceed with resetting it.

Start By Looking for a Reset Button

Most centralized air conditioning units have a reset button on them. Unfortunately, it’s small and can be difficult to see at first. You’ll want to look at your indoor air conditioning unit.

Most reset buttons are fashioned in bright red to help you identify them easier. If you can’t find a reset button, it’s highly advisable to consult your owner’s manual to determine if you have a reset button and where it’s located. If you don’t have your owner’s manual on hand, you can likely find one for your model air conditioner online.

If You Have a Reset Button

In most instances, your AC unit will have a reset button. You’ll want to hold it down for three seconds. If your system kicks back on, you’re good to go. If your equipment doesn’t kick back on, then hold the button down again for three full seconds. Sometimes, it takes holding the button down twice in a row for the unit to fully turn on.

If You Don’t Have a Reset Button or It Isn’t Working

Head to your outdoor compressor unit, and look for the power shut-off switch. Turn it from the on to the off position. Next, head to your electrical panel, and locate the circuit breaker connected to your air conditioning system. Flip it to the off position.

You’ll want to leave the circuit breaker off for about 20 to 30 minutes. This will help any charge in the unit to dissipate. Once the waiting period is up, it’s time to turn your system back on. Be mindful of the way that you do it because you’ll be performing the steps backward this time.

Start with the circuit breaker, and turn that to the on position. Then, move onto the power shut-off at the outdoor compressor unit. Finally, make sure your thermostat is indeed set to the cooling function and an appropriate temperature.

Your AC System Still Isn’t Working

If you’ve followed the steps that we went over above and they’ve failed to turn your AC unit back on, then it’s time to call in a professional. There’s likely another underlying issue that will need to be fixed by an experienced professional with the appropriate equipment to do so.
